چکیده

The Iignin-degrading enzyme system of white-rot fungi, which are mostly basidiomycetes, has been studied intensively in recent years. The extracellular component of the system is comprised of Iignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase, glyoxal oxidase and certain metabolites. Lignin is fragmented by this system, and the plethora of degradation products taken up by the hyphae and further metabolized by the intracellular system. The intracellular system has received very little research attention. The structural complexity and heterogeneity of Iignin show in fact that this enzyme system is so nonspecific that it also degrades a variety of hazardous compounds, including polycyclic aromatics, some polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins, DDT, and many chlorinated phenols. Using pentachlorophenol (PCP) as a model substrate, we have studied the possibility of using white-rot fungi to remediate soils contaminated with hazardous compounds. Successful laboratory results led to a field study in the summer of 1989. Results showed that the laboratory findings could be duplicated in the field.

The potential for white-rot fungi in the treatment of pollutants

Lignin-degrading white-rot fungi have the unique ability to degrade/mineralize a broad spectrum of structurally diverse toxic environmental pollutants. Extracellular peroxidases are important in degrading some, but not all, xenobiotic compounds. More research is needed to realize the potential of white-rot fungi in field-scale applications. Recent progress in our knowledge of the biochemistry a...

Lignin degradation and roles of white rot fungi: Study on an efficient symbiotic system in fungus-growing termites and its application to bioremediation

White rot fungi produce extracellular phenoloxidases and can decompose lignin efficiently. Elfvingia applanata has been successfully applied for the bioconversion of bisphenol A, suggesting the usefulness of white rot fungi for bioremediation. In order to attain real bioremediation, the recycling of ecomolecules in the ecosystem is important. The sophisticated symbiotic system of white rot fung...

White-rot fungi in phenols, dyes and other xenobiotics treatment – a brief review

Bioremediation is an attractive technology that utilizes the metabolic potential of microorganisms in order to clean up the environmental pollutants to the less hazardous or non-hazardous forms with less input of chemicals, energy and time. Whiterot fungi are unique organisms that show the capacities of degrading and mineralizing lignin as well as organic, highly toxic and recalcitrant compound...

Environmental Factors and Bioremediation of Xenobiotics Using White Rot Fungi

This review provides background information on the importance of bioremediation approaches. It describes the roles of fungi, specifically white rot fungi, and their extracellular enzymes, laccases, ligninases, and peroxidises, in the degradation of xenobiotic compounds such as single and mixtures of pesticides. We discuss the importance of abiotic factors such as water potential, temperature, a...

Degradation of Bunker C Fuel Oil by White-Rot Fungi in Sawdust Cultures Suggests Potential Applications in Bioremediation

Fungal lignocellulolytic enzymes are promising agents for oxidizing pollutants. This study investigated degradation of Number 6 "Bunker C" fuel oil compounds by the white-rot fungi Irpex lacteus, Trichaptum biforme, Phlebia radiata, Trametes versicolor, and Pleurotus ostreatus (Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes). Averaging across all studied species, 98.1%, 48.6%, and 76.4% of the initial Bunker C ...
